The world almost missed its chance to know Amali Maxine Phillips. Born with a brain injury that led to cerebral palsy, Amali didn’t breathe for her first twenty minutes of life—a terrifying moment for her parents. Despite the odds, however, Amali was determined to survive.
Now nine, Amali shares her poetry with you in Dear Parents. A poet since age five, she uses the written word for many purposes to reflect on the world around her, to reach out to family and friends, and to express herself and her love of life.
The author of over a hundred poems, Amali chose the best for this collection. In Dear Parents, you’ll discover how expressive and lyrical a young mind can be. Travel with Amali as she considers who she is and what is important to her. Her poems catch moments in time, crystalizing them into tiny moments of perfection.
Amali hopes her poems will help parents who need comfort and hope when their children are hospitalized, and she has decided that all proceeds from Dear Parents will go to help the homeless of New York City. She sees the homeless every day, and she wants to do something to help.

This talented and very young poet offers her readers an inspiring collection of poems. Deeply personal and confidently direct, her poetry draws a map of feelings and thoughts that are so much relatable. She uses just the right words to reflect upon everyday experiences, fleeting moments of beauty in nature, family rituals, and her inner life of self-discovery. I am finding it difficult to choose my favorites from among the poems in the book, but I would mention "Poetry," "Where I'm From," and "Crystal" as particularly touching and beautiful to me. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy good poetry and to those who are looking to share some good poems with their children. Congratulations to the author.Product details

Dear Parents A Young Poet Anthology Amali Maxine Phillips 9780692724088 Books Reviews
An inspiring collection of poems by a talented young poet with wisdom and maturity well beyond her years. My favorite is "My Dream," a poem that challenges us to think twice before we judge others. In it, the author dreams to change the world--that she will, indeed, and this anthology is just the beginning!
A great and inspiring book of poetry!
Beautiful thoughts from someone so young!
What a beautiful set of happy poems to read to your child before bed. the author has a joyous spirit and a gift for expressing it. It was so much more meaningful to read poems by a child as compared to an adult poet writing for what they think children want to hear. My six year old loved to read another child's voice and it also inspired her to think about expressing herself as well through poetry. The messages in the book--the author's confidence and love for her family--are beautiful, and left me wondering how her gifts will evolve.
